Antique Japanese Edo Era c1780 Lacquer Sugi Wood Suzuribako Calligraphy Tansu 14" Doll with the exception of aAntique Japanese suzuribako from the Edo Era (c. 1780's). This 18th century portable calligraphy tansu has three drawers and a lidded top section, made of solid Sugi wood (cryptomeria). It is finished in the original dark lacquer made up of over 10 coats of tinted urushi lacquer that has worn through in areas and the heavy patina from the centuries is clearly visible. The metal hardware is hand forged iron. Suzuribako were used as portable accounting
