Baron de Lahontan was a French military man that served in the late 17th century throughout Canada and into modern day Wisconsin and Minnesota and northern plains. When he returned to France and wrote about his expedition he included a discussion on the "Long River" which fed into the Mississippi and stretched into the plains. This river shown on the far western edge of the map is
