一対の向かい合う蝶をあらわした文様を対い蝶と呼びますが、四方に蝶を配置することで全体が七宝文様のように見える構図になっています。
17～18世紀のインド由来の布地にも描かれている古い文様で、山道を登るように線が左右に振れていることから山道文や山路文と呼びます。
