In Goldfinch on Ironweed, the purple blossoms complement the canary yellow of an American goldfinch and a tiger swallowtail butterfly. The American, or Eastern, goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) is the state bird of Iowa, New Jersey, and Washington. The Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio glaucas) was named for its appearance. Its distinctive black striping resembles a tiger's pattern, and
