It is considered the most important rasayana (rejuvenating agent not scientifically proven). In German it is also known as the "Indian gooseberry" because of its similarity to the local gooseberry. The fresh fruit is extremely sour and contains a lot of vitamin C. It has five of the six possible flavors, the only one missing is salty. It calms all three doshas, but mainly the Pitta dosha.
