It is originally a chance seedling of 'Thiessen'. Like 'Thiessen', 'Martin' is considered the most large fruited of all Saskatoon berry varieties. The rather uniform ripeness is an advantage in commercial cultivation. The variety 'Martin' is also the earliest flowering of all Saskatoon berries. In areas prone to late frost, however, it may make sense to use 'Saskalate'.
