Constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse with a leftward facing profile of Grand Duke Ludwig III, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse with an inscription of FR RETTUNG VON MENSCHEN LEBEL (FOR RESCUE OF HUMAN LIFE), the obverse maker marked C. VOIGT, measuring 33. 15
