It was held to support the existing abortion laws and to also vocalize opposition to an civil rights bill abortion amendment that was making its way through Congress at the time. The DC event also featured speeches from Gloria Steinem, former New York State Representative Bella Abzug, and then NOW President Eleanor Smeal.
