In bronze, the obverse features two naval vessels engaged in combat, the upper contour of the medal bears the words THE CIVIL WAR, the exergue the dates 1861 1865, the reverse features a spread eagle resting upon an anchor with draped chain, over the words FOR SERVICE, the upper contour of the medal bears the words UNITED STATES NAVY, numbered 534 on the edge of the medal, on original ribbon, very fine condition.
