Born on the 4th of December 1922 in Iserlohn in Westphalia, he joined the Hitler Youth as a teenager. June 1st 1938 he was named Comrade Unit Leader of his local 136 Iserlohn youth group. On the 9th of November 1938 he was made Troop Leader of the same group. In November of 1940 he was promoted to Junior Corporal
