After it has dried and gesso is applied, the artist adds a cement mixture, which dries quickly for a beautifully cracked surface. She then covers the surface with encaustic wax. This deepens the color of the cracks and makes a smooth blended surface. A sand painted silver panel is fired and patina copper on wood is placed in the opening of the panel.
