The historical original of this shield brooch is, according to the classification of the archaeologist Jan Petersen, referred to as a brooch of type P 51 and dates from the 9th century. The oval brooch of type P 51 was especially widespread in Western Norway, but also occurred in almost all other Viking inhabited areas and constitutes almost half of all brooches in the Viking Age.
