Kirk, the U. S. S. Enterprise NCC 1701 returned to Earth. Kirk was promoted to Admiral and handed command to Captain William Decker, who oversaw a dramatic modernisation refit. Essentially a complete rebuild over the skeleton of the ship, the vessel that emerged after 18 months of work was larger, sleeker and more powerful, and Starfleet retroactively deemed the refit
